Question in a Lyman F48 sight.

    Hello,
I inhered my 1903 sporter from my late father-in-law. And It has a Redman 3x-9x scope and has the part of the Lyman sight still attached. I found the other part that attaches to the rifle. It seems to be an older sight as I can find a ID with these kind adjustable knobs. Well there not knobs, there flat head buttons. I'm I correct in saying that it is of and older type or military? Also is it missing the peep that screws into the front? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am not an expert on the Lyman, but I think those knobs are the "hunter" style and adjustable with a coin. The sight should be marked with the model number e.g. 48, 57 etc. Yes, it is missing the aperture peep. Alot of them were removed to make the sight more shooter friendly as it allows a larger sight picture, similar to a Ghost ring setup.
You can get a replacement aperture from Apertures N More at Apertures More, custom made sight apertures
Great quality, nice guy. I have ordered some for my lyman 48s on my springfields.
You may also just like shooting without a peep.

The rear sight is an early Lyman 57 SME .It was an inexpensive replacement to the 48 Lyman, and more contemporary with other sight companies
less expensive sight assemblies."F48" is actually the serial number of the sight assembly, both parts will have the same number(slide and base).
This sight fit a number of applications besides the 1903 Springfield.
