my new 1917
I have been looking for a 1917 I finally found one it is a winchester original blue good looking bore, red strip on the stock canadian broad arrows no us rebuild stamps, importers stamp on barrel, serial 115800, star in a circle on the receiver, all winchester except for the rear sight ladder will post pics latter

Check the muzzle crown very carefully. If that rifle was used as a Home Guard reserve, or in a similar function in another country, then it may well have been cleaned and polished to death at the front of the bore.

As memory serves me, the red paint was put on the M17's to differentiate them from the .303 P14's, and most of these were issued to the RCAF, but some were issued to other units as well. I had one a few years back with markings to the Governor General's Foot Guard. They usually have nice bores, seemingly more dependent on how they were treated after being sold to surplus. Very nice rifle, there!
