Ross Barrel Removal
Hi : I have a couple of barrelled Ross actions that have been dewatted by pinning and welding. I'd like to take the barrels off to mix and match with some other parts I have to get some decent re-enactment / display rifles. What's the best way to do this? All recommendations greatfully accepted.

Quite apart from cutting loose the welds and pins used for dewatting, the Ross barrels are held into the receiver by just a couple turns of very large and very fast threads. The barrel is kept from unscrewing by a plug/wedge that is threaded into the underside of the front receiver ring. It's been years since I have done it, but if I recall correctly, that has to be removed in order to unscrew the barrel.

MGM's post remarks apply only to the short-barreled MkII's. All other Ross rifles used conventional RH threads. As soon as I hear "drilled and pinned" (and sometimes welded too) I'd bet we're talking about the oiled-up MkIII's that came in from India a few years back.....several choices here for you.
1. Throw the barrel and receiver away, clean up the walnut, and sell it to one of the many owners of MkIII's that suffered Bubba's modifications.
2. If you only was rifles to play soldier with but not to go "bang", why not just file the welds smooth, hit them with cold blue, and you're good to go.
