    rebarreling the M1 Garand

    another info post on how to rebarrel the M1 Granand,
    take the rifle completely down to a barreled action, cept for the rear sight.
    i wrap aluminum tape around the ring so that the wrench doesnt mar the finish,
    shown is a addapter that i made to fit both the M1 and the M14icon rifles, to work with my flat topped wrench.
    also shown is the special inserts i made for M1 and M14,s notice how its 2 piece on the small side?so that it will flex and fit the conture of either rifle, made of aluminum.

    wrench installed, and in the vise, when removed, install handle up with the top of the action facing the floor.
    pictured is the action removed from the barrel,
    i have epoxied a level bubble onto a mill leveled sight base assembly, and a standard flat based bubble level,,{oil filled slow type} youll never get the water bubble to settle down right.

    remove the old barrel from the vise, now put the new barrel in the vice, so that the handle is down, and the action will set upright when indexed home. {sights up}
    clean the inside of the threads of the action with a soft rifle brush, maybe some solvent,
    i dont lube or oil, to avoid lock up.
    install the front sight level as shown, run the action on the barrel, then check index,
    should be close by 1/8 of an inch to index,
    tighten the action slowly, untill the bubbles both center as shown, this may take a couple times to get just right,,,,they have to be dead on.
    with just the bolt and no op rod, check with a action proving dummy round...
    should feed easy, with out force,
    this was a used barrrel, a new barrel would need finish reamed, a pull through reamer is best for a Garandicon..

    Chuck, thanks for the tip on using levels to get top dead center on the barrel index. I just got an M1icon back from a friend who needed cash and the sight was out of whack. We always had to do it by eye. I wasn't looking forward to that part. This gun is 3,340,415 which I think is '44 and went through the Danishicon rebuild. Nice pipe and mostly Springfield parts. They date all over the map but it's for shooting. I had to make the barrel vise and action wrench this afternoon and just pulled the barrel and re tightened it to correct. Now to re-zero. Before it shot various places at different ranges. You can't zero one of those.
    Regards, Jim
