I found the problem with the stringing shots!!

I finally found the problem with my stringing shots. The only reason I am confessing to this is that someone may have the same problem someday, otherwise I would keep my goober mouth shut for once.

It was the trigger. I initially wanted to take full advantage of the A5 scoped rifle, so I had put an aftermarket trigger in to "improve" my accuracy. It evidently was bearing on something, because I finally got disgusted and jerked it out, put the old trigger in to put the rifle back in the rack, and just for grins, I decided to shoot a 75 yard group (had been sighting in an open sighted Siamese Mauser in 45-70 with 55 grs 3031 behind 300 gr Sierras and I needed a break). First five shot group from that old Springfield had all five shots in one ragged hole at 75 yards. Moved back to 100 yards and got several nice 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" groups with the usual 3-shot cloverleafs and two out a bit. That SA 12-15 barrel can still put them in the black. After shooting those full bore 45-70's, that 30-06 felt like a 22. Needless to say, I feel a bit sheepish.

Moral of story - don't change what SA spent so much time refining.

OK, let me have it. I know I should have checked, but the trigger?

I finally bit the bullet and got the glasses I have need for some time. They came in yesterday. I can see again! It makes it possible for me to shoot open sighted rifles, but I look a bit like Ben Franklin.

Are you now a good shootin' four eyed redneck? Hell, I shoot with tri-focal glasses. I aim for the center of the blurred target. Don't miss. Only thing in focus in my sight picture is the front post. Gonna' get some contacts soon and that should change things a lot.

I never mentioned changing the trigger because I never thought it to be important. Now I know better. It was a M1917 aftermarket trigger that I prefer for 03's. I have a stockpile of them. I prefer very light trigger pulls - very light. Too light for most people.

I can see the leaves on trees now. My loss of vision was so gradual, I did not realize what I had lost. I can see the front sight, target and rear sight now. It makes quite a bit of difference. Kind of hard to get used to wearing them though. Mine look like Ben Franklin's. Little glasses, due to vanity I guess. I have been shooting on a daily basis, and today was one of my better days, even in drizzling rain. I put 2-liter plastic bottles out in the woods and try to hit them with one shot. It is fun. None are closer than 75 yards, and in brush. When you hit one, you know it.

Remember going to Saints games back in the eighties. Couldn't read the player's names or numbers from where I was sittin'. Got my first pair of glasses not long after. Went to another game and it was like having a new life. Man...I could see everything. Guess my buddies got tired of hearing about how I could see again, but nobody complained.

Little bit back in the old not seeing as well as I would like to boat now. Will get those contacts and troop to the range in Garyville with '03's in tow to see what happens.

Sad to say but the last time I was out shooting my M1903 the rear sight was kinda hard to keep in focus. Oh the wonders of age and tired eyes

Glad you found the problem, Jim. It almost sounds as if there's something wrong with that particular trigger assembly. A rough spot on the tip of the sear?
Anyways, I've had to start wearing reading glasses, with my contacts, since last year. Tried bifocal contacts, but they're too much of a compromise at both ends. They actually work by having the center section for close-up, and the outer ring for distance. You have to wear them for a couple weeks to re-train your brain as to how it iterprets the data from the eye! Couldn't get used to them.
