First Ross Rifle
Hey Guys,
New to the forum here. I just purchased my first Ross Rifle and am looking for some more info on it, mainly with the what the markings mean. So far I have determined it is a MK2 3*, but that is all I know on it. There are no U.S. import markings on the gun. Please let me know if you need any additional pictures. I am really curious about this rifle.

Does anyone have any info on this? Or knowledge of a book or website that would have the info.

It is as you say a 1905 Mk II 3*. Most but not all were sent to the US as training rifles during WWI, and will have at the least a US flaming bomb just abaft the trigger guard under the wrist. Yours has had the wood bobbed a bit and is missing the front sight hood, but fortunately whoever shortened the stock left the front band behind, so it could be lengthened again if you wish. I will try to post some scans of the relevant pages of the RRS when I get home later tonight.
How is the bore? Most of these had the chambers reamed to avoid the issues with tight chambers and variable military (British mostly) issue ammunition, so they do horrible things to brass--tends to fireform into a semi-cylindrical look but can be reloaded. Some shoot very well, some, not so well.
Cheers

A bit hard to tell from the photos but has yours also had all the sling swivels removed? I don't see the swivel which screws into the buttstock, the one in front of the trigger guard looks bobbed, and is the one on the middle band gone as well?

There are no swivels present. Cleaned right off. If you click on the square at the bottom of the pic, it blows up huge for detail...
