I guess, but doing ladders and flats dressed that way is still going to be a hog. Least of the evils?

I believe this picture is the early way to climb from a ship into a landing craft. If the sailor or soldier fell into the ocean all he had to do was unbuckle his ammo belt and let everything fall away and swim to the surface instead of being dragged to the bottom by all of his gear.

I suppose. But having done it a few times myself, I expect that rifle would get speared into the cargo net and become a problem. Anyway, they changed it...
