It appears that you did exceptionally well. The rifle appears correct and original. Does the stock have an inspection stamp on the left wrist? If so, please describe.
Hope this helps. Thanks for sharing.

Does the phrase "...got away with grand larceny" mean anything??

WES in a box, small s on the tip, circle P behind the trigger guard, R in the cutoff recess maybe a L above the R not sure . ther stock is very dry what to recommend I oil it with. I am really kicking myself for years I had a 1907 dated bayonet bright blade leather scabard with krag type hanger about 4 years ago I needed money for another purchase so I justified selling the bayonet because I never dreamed I would get the correct rifle for the bayonet

I use boiled linseed oil (the purists sometimes recommend raw linseed oil, available at many art stores) mixed with a little turpentine. hand-rub it on. I let it "sit" for maybe a half hour, then wipe off the excess with a soft rag. Repeat over and over until you get a slight satin "sheen". You DON'T want a "varnishy"-looking finish.

If only these rifles could talk. I wonder what the five notches on the handguard mean? Are they from battle? Deer taken in the field? From target shooting? I guess we'll never know...
