M5A1 Bayonet fit
I am getting a tight fit w/ a M5A1 bayo on the end of al 4 of my M1s, the bayonet only slides halfway on until it stops and won't go any further unless persuaded by a rubber mallet. The stud doesn't even get inside of the gas plug. Nor does the latch catch. The bayonet is clean and lubricated. I have taken it apart but still have not managed to find the problem. Suggestions?

I found a spot and gentle filed it. Still a tight fit, I don't think that was the problem.

How does a M1905 or M1 Bayonet fit? Are they tight? If so, the bayonet lug may have an issue with straightness or burrs.

They slip right on. I have tried the m5a1 on multiple M1s all have the same problem. All accept a 1905 perfectly.

I'd probably go after the other side of the fit, and paint the bayonet lug of one rifle with Magic Marker or some such, and see where it rubs off. That might point you to the tight dimension of the bayonet's slot.

Who is the maker? As I recall there were s bunch of Danish m5a1s that had fit problems.

I believe they will not also fit the early single slot gas plug as well.

All my M1s have poppet valves, no single slots. It is a Imperial, but it does have a Dane wood scabbard. I will have to find time to try the magic marker, thanks for the suggestion!

The M5's are not at the collectable status in my opinion. File away until you get satisfaction. How about the diameter of the stud? If you put it on 90 degrees (not using the lug) will it slip into the poppet?
