The film footage with the scoped Ross is fake as tits on a bull. The character holding the rifle clearly doesn't have a clue, and proceeds to fumble the loading while he fakes the kick of the rifle. Notice how the eyecup pushes on the visor of his cap so it almost falls off his head! He would have got a nice case of sniper's eye if he had actually fired a round from that position.
A little earlier in the film during the "Reconnaissance Party" clip, we see our pretend sniper sauntering up third in line with neither rifle nor webbing and a grin on his face. Obviously no patrol would move in that way anywhere that might be in view of the enemy, and certainly not in broad daylight. It looks like the Ross was carried up by the fourth from last man, but perhaps it was thought best not to film the actual user of that rifle.
