Ummm- don't do it.
The only place the butt would be serial numbered is hidden when assembled. And that only really applies to No.4(T) rifles with the butt that was handled by H&H during conversion.

Why do you want to do that mate?

My above Post refers to No.4 rifles. Australian SMLEs often have a S/N on the side. But still, why tart up something? Make it servicable and drive on!

Would that not be 'fraud' - if the intention is pass it off as being original when it was'nt. 'Humping' I believe is the term commonly used
No better than those 'repro' No32 scopes with a 1940's date
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

I have to say that re stamping any numbers on replacement parts is frowned upon in collectors circles. It is either original or it has been restored with original period parts, or at the very worst, restored with reproduction parts (which is still fine, they serve the purpose well) But to try to pass off as an original piece by stamping the numbers will get you a reputation that you can't be trusted when trading parts or even guns... Your gun, your choice...
Reminds me of the story of a bloke who used to be called "Luigi the bridge builder"
there was something about "just one goat..." in the story
