Identify Unusual Barrel Marking
I have a 1907 manufactured 03 Springfield with a 1-19 barrel but above the numbers are two letters I can't find in any of my books. They are A V over 1-19.
I looked in Joe Poyers book The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle, Second Edition which is very helpful. I also looked in The 03 Era, Collector Grade Publications, which I didn't found very helpful, Clark Campbell mostly focused on the Sporter, Sniper, and .22 Springfields.
Can anyone tell me what A V stands for?
Thanks
Al

The barrel was made by Avis. Used primarily as a replacement barrel.

JP was right on the money Avis barrels were used post WW1 as replacements during arsenal rebuilds. I have one on a 1906 Springfield with the same date.

Be careful in using Joe Poyer's book on the M1903 - it contains numerous errors.

I tend to prefer Hatcher's notebook in concert with Brophy.
