I have a type 97 Sniper 6.5 MM (I think 97 is the correct designation) but can find little info. on them. Anyone have a thread or a lead to some literature that would help?

Not a lot of help here, mine was #10844, series 1, made at Nagoya Arsenal as an adaptation of the Type 38. You can decode the marks on yours to tell the manufacturer. The Type 97s were numbered in a series much like our 03A4s up to #14040 or so. Mine did not have a bi-pod or aircraft sights and it shouldn't have. The telescope was 2.5 power and made by Nikko. Nate

Gunboards.com Japanese weapons forum should have lots of information. Victor Soto wrote the book on Japanese snipers is often there and Fred Hunnicut, who wrote MROJ is often there not to mention Frank Allen, who wrote the Type 38 book.
Kokura also made a little over 8,000 type 97 snipers. All type 97's got a 2.5X scope which was zeroed and numbered to the rifle. Very capable rifles.
