Just like a Sunday stroll they did get a tad excited when the mid upper or the rear gunner shot the night fighter down........and why not so many fell foul to those guns.
It reminds me of Guy Gibson. He was cool under fire. After he made his run on the Möhne dam he watched the next Lancaster get hit by flak and explode. When he called in the next bomber he flew ahead of it and to the side to draw the flak.
