    Help with mishap on range

I am new to the forum and looking for some help/advice. This weekend, my son was out shooting his CMPicon Garandicon and on the third round had an issue with the ejector. Pieces came off and we stopped shooting and collected all the pieces. When we got back home, it was apparant the firing pin, ejector and ejector spring, extractor spring and plunger were all accounted for, but had come "undone" while shooting. I was able to get all the pieces put back together again, and it seems fine, but my question is why would it have come apart in the first place?

He was firing CMP LC ammunition and not doing anything strange for the first three rounds. What I'm really wondering about is if I need to purchase any new pieces thinking that some may be worn a bit and caused the issue.

    Any thoughts/advice are appreciated. Thanks.

Hard to tell without being there and more information.

Guess #1: Check the leg on the extractor that is inserted in the bolt and see if it is flush, or below flush, with the body of the bolt. If the extractor leg protruds below the body of the bolt a little, and has tracking marks, it is possible this is the problem. The leg is higher than the bolt and may catch on the bridge, or something else, and cause it to pop up.

Possible you have an M14icon extractor, instead of an M1 extractor. Also, how old is the bolt?

It's a CMPicon purchased 1 year ago, one of the CMP commenorative editions that has a new stock and black action. It's a Springfield action from 1941 but looks very nice. We've not fired it very much so have little experience with this specific Garandicon, other than it shoots very well. Here are some pictures of the bolt after we reassembled it.

    Rear of firing pin

I was wondering if one of the springs may be weak, but I don't have much experience with Garand issues so have lots to learn. I assume we should go ahead and try shooting it again, but want to make sure we are safe.

    Thanks.

Comtact CMPicon. Tell them what is going on. I think you have an M14icon extractor there.

Had this happen once in college ROTC with a welded-grenade-launcher converted to BFA, which I bought from Service Armament. The Colonel was not pleased that I broke his rifle, a government M-1. They made me carry my dead rifle the rest of the field problem. Happened again one time unloading (merely jacking the bolt back on) one of Elmer Ballance's early M-1A "M-13&1/2s"... wrong parts may well have been to blame for both mishaps. This is not a dangerous event, unless your life depends on the rifle. But it is a first class stoppage, and if you are out in the grass, you'll never find that extractor.

Called CMPicon, they think the same thing, M14icon extractor. They are sending a replacement so we will see how that goes.

fred007; when you get the m1 extractor if you have time could you take a photo of them side by side, I for one would like to see the difference in the parts.

    Thank you for your time.
