Hello. Bear Cat here and I'm a new member. Regarding the Kragicon Jorgensen rifle Model 1898 (mine was manufactured in 1903) was there an inspector with an initial of "D"? On the bottom of the wrist is the stylized "P" proof mark, and above it where the inspector's mark usually is a poorly discernable letter, but it appears to be a "D". I was curious, since so many of these rifles seem to have the N mark only. By the way, by stock also lacks any cartouche on the left side.

I have a question about inspector markings on a 1898 Springfield Kragicon-Jorgensen rifle (produced in 1903). Above the stylized "P" proof mark on the bottom of the stock wrist, is what appears to be a "D". I note that most inspector initials on our Krag rifles were made with an "N", but I'm wondering if there was indeed an inspector who used the letter D. Does anyone know?

Welcome to the forum Bear Cat. All I know is that these are the stock inspection marks and can be either a 1 or 2 digit number or a single letter. I have three krag rifles with pretty clear proofs and two have a 2 digit number and the other a letter ( J I think, but not a D or an N). I only have the Poyer book on the US Kragicon, so can't say if the other references say more.

The small letter 'mark' you are referring to probably identified a 'stocker' or sub-inspector. There is a variety of letters, numbers, or initials that appear on Kragicon stocks in that area. There are a lot of other letters and symbols that appear on other areas of the Krag stock and metal. The meaning or identity of the worker or inspector has kind of been lost. I am not aware of any 'Rosetta Stone' that deciphers these obscure small markings.

Maybe someday more will be known, discovered, and published.

Here is a small 'D' on a model 1896 Stock. This Stock was likely a field replacement and lacks a 'Cartouche' and the 'Circled P'.
