Long Branch serial numbers?

a thread on CGN has me wondering
what would the signifigance be of a 1945 No4Mk1 with a serial number "N2"
that's it, two digits in all the right places, the rifle is in great shape not rebuilt/painted etc
any help?

Ah, but how do YOU know it hasn't been rebuilt or repainted etc etc. And what does the other forum say about it? Can we only assume that it''s a Long Branch because a Mk1 in 1945 is unlikely................

NZ preceeding a number might just be a rifle sent to New Zealand

peter thanks, it's a mk1* and the serial number is N2 and nothing else not N2...

In my very limited experience, I'd say.......... Actually anything I say is academic because we/you don't have the rifle to see, even in picture form!

But I'd bet that with a straightedge, feelers and micrometer we'd find the original number linished off, re-stamped and made good. We've seen it many, many times with Savage rifles 'without' the US PROPERTY mark
