Good things come in big packages also...

Long story cut short, I have had the pleasure of shooting a H&K MP5 on a few occasions and loved it.... of course in the UKicon were limited to what we can have but I was wanting something similar to plink with and practice my standing and kneeling shooting, of course could of gone for a Ruger 10/22 but whatever you do to a 10/22 it still looks like a 10/22.......

I'd seen what a guy had done with swapping the furniture over on a GSG MP522 to original G3 furniture, it looks the dogs reproductive orgins to me and was happy when a cheap GSG come my way, I thought I'd completed the order for the furniture set but forgot to pay....... so after payment it arrived yesterday, must admit it was a gamble but the wood is excellent,

It doesn't really need words with the pics, but the socket the Butt fitted into required some work and not as easy as the Guy I'd seen do (have included a link to his conversion) I had to make a forming tool to open up the socket a few MM and then use heat to bring the back end out and pull the front in, worked quite well..... some pics below, the butt transforms it straight away, I was going to do the same as the Guy in the link but I will reduce the hand guard to replace the plastic one and keep it compact.

So what you get in the package

    alongside the GSG

Some cutting, tweaking and a file it was eventually a good fit...

Just the hand guard to cut and make good, I was going to extend everything to use the hand guard as is but to keep it compact it still looks good.

Plenty of pics on the internet, but this is the link I had seen and the gut only used a dremil etc.

Geoff, that looks great, really good job! Looking forward to seeing her complete.

It's going to look like an early trials MP5. I wonder if you could create a straight magazine to complete the look?

Thanks John, thought you may enjoy it..... there is drum mag you can get...., the pics don't do it justice to be honest, but looks a different rifle, still lots to do but that was the main bit, if you look on the net there is others who have created a G3 from one, but I'll chop the hand guard to suit, just wanted something that looked different....

What did the trials one look like ?

Hi Geoff, I think the early trials examples had wooden butts and straight magazines were the norm until about 1970 when the curved examples came into use.

Just a thought Geoff, I don't know how those GSG5 magazines are constructed, but I wonder (assuming they are all polymer in the body) if it would be possible to gently heat up a spare magazine with a heat gun and straighten it to go with the early look?? Probably a stupid idea ... but it is Monday morning!

John, I doubt it with the mags and only have the one at present, be nice to find a straight mag, I guess someone may do them, to be honest more than happy just swapping over the cheap plastic butt and hand guard but it does require some work if anyone is thinking about it.

Still some internal bits to sort also. For anyone in the UKicon or EU looking for the furniture set, I bought it from Zib Militaria, cheaper in the long run from trying to get it from the states, although its not cheap but saved me many hours of producing one and probably would of ended up with another shelved project....

There is a lot stuff and add on's you can buy for them, a lot go for extendable butt stock and change the handguard for one you can attach all bells and whistles etc, but the wooden G3 furniture wins hands down all the time to me. (maybe more to do with age an tradition....)

The .22 HKs are quite reasonable in price as is the wood sets. Great idea!

Further progress made today, The hand guard was cut and had to use the dremil to take out some wood so it would locate properly, the problem is to get to fit snug the screw holding the cocking tube had to be removed and the tube slid forward so the guard would fit in, I could of cut it shorter but wanted a good fit, so it will need an access hole drilled in the left side, apart from that it went well and fits like like a glove, over all very pleased, totally transforms it.

The silencer tube is just for show and cosmetics, *the barrel is thin and could also be cut back 4" if I permanently fixed a bar from the rear going through the stock, as this would keep with in the required overall legal length which I may do later on...

*(if the barrel was shortened to the minimum of 12" and the butt stock removed its under the legal size of 24" and could be fired different story if it couldn't be used)

Just happy to fit the hanguard at this stage, some tweaking to do here and there, need to sand blast the socket for the butt, phosphate and paint, trim the hand guard at the rear or chamfer so doesn't look like its just had a saw through it. Also need to make a plate that fits in the rear of the rifle that secures the bolt assembly and find a small spring to fit in the ejector.

Forgot to mention Zib Militaria also sent a calender....

Looks really good Geoff, nice job mate, it really gives a different retro look to the carbine

A friend of mine has cut the barrel, perminently fitted a long FE and a retractrable stock that's been pinned open to comply with the minimum length rules.
