Help me find a Spanish-American war trapdoor
I'm trying to find a Trapdoor representative of what a 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry soldier in the Spanish-American war would have been issued. Fairly certain they'd have never seen the Krag.
Any tips on what model or anything else I might look for?
Thanks
Sean

Based on the documents and images I've seen related to the Spanish War emergency, just about any variation in the trapdoor series was used. In documentation the ordnance department was flooded with requisitions for all kinds of equipment including rifles, that it was thought the militia had been issued in sufficient quantity and would bring with them upon federalization. In one document an ordnance officer reported that a regiment turned in 108 rifles missing parts, that had apparently been cannibalized to repair other rifles, or perhaps to build a spare parts inventory. Other documents detailed the requirement that regiments that were not deploying to turn in equipment to fill shortages in regiments that were deploying to Tampa. In this document the First Ohio Regiment is mentioned as receiving equipment from other regiments prior to movement to Tampa, presumably for deployment to Cuba.
The most prominent feature of these rifles that is visible in images is the rear sight. Both the rear sights M1879 and M1884 are visible, with the latter rear sight more often observed. A few regiments were armed with rod bayonet rifles, but it is far more likely the Sixth Ohio was equipped with the standard rifle and bayonet M1873. The 6th Ohio Regiment was deployed overseas until well into 1899 and may have been re-equipped with rifle M1898, during the deployment, although the priority of issue for rifle M1898 was to troops deployed to the Philippine Islands. A rifle M1873 with rear sight M1879 or M1884 would be appropriate as representative of the rifle carried by a soldier in the Sixth Ohio Infantry Regiment.

Just the other day, an individual on the trapdoor forum informed me he couldn't find a single trapdoor issued to any 6th Ohio unit in the SRS. He did however find several references to Krags being issued... LINK
I'm starting to rethink what rifle my GGrand Father might have been issued...
