L4 part numbers
Hi all,
Yet another question of Bren minutia, in going through the IPL for the L4A4 I noticed that there are two separate formats for parts numbers, ones prefixed "MG" with a number and ones using NATO Stock Numbers (NSNs). Would the parts numbered in the older format be those carried over from (& therefore interchangeable with) the older .303 calibre Bren guns?
Cheers!

You're on the right lines but the Ordnance system was another planet as far as the REME were concerned. Don't mix up the Design Department MG numbers that start DD(E)xxxx.
The MG numbers you refer to were the Ministry of Supply numbers followed by the NSN's
It got quite complicated when you had .303" Mk3 guns and 7.62mm L4A4 guns together as I did at Yeovil. At the time only the body, breech block, ejector assembly and bipod sleeve as I remember were the only differences! These had NSN's and the remainder were the old MoS numbers. But as things were modified/changed, such as ejection opening cover catches and piston posts, then the new parts came out with NSN's

Hi Peter,
So as far as the parts go, those with the old MoS numbers were the ones carried over from the .303 Brens, whereas the L4 only parts have NSNs, correct?
Cheers!

Not exactly because later on, they ALL went over to NSN's...............
