    Ammo Question

    HI all,
I usually haunt the M1icon and 03 forums, but recently was looking into purchasing a Krag. In my lookin around I noticed that ammo is almost no where to be found. I am not a reloader, and am wondering if it is worth getting one if I will have trouble finding ammo. Thanks for any input.

I see the correct ammo at almost all of the big gunshows. I reload and like 45gr of 4831 with a 168gr AMAX bullet. Very nice combination. Must add the front sight is slim and tough to pick up on bright, sunny days.

I just bought an 1898 Kragicon rifle and have been to 3 local gun shows since. All three had the Remington soft point ammo. The catch is they want $45 for a box of 20. Got lucky at one show and got a couple of boxes for "only" $30. Reloaders may be able to justify buying at that price? I'm hoping and praying that more new stuff is available later this year for hunting season. The rifle is a work of art! I'm wondering why if they are still making new 303 why not 30 40?

I think it does get loaded periodically, but never cheaply. It is a good round to reload if you plan to shoot yours much.

With only Winchester and Remington currently loading the round....and then only seasonally.....it is not going to ever be inexpensive. The MSRP is the same for their 30-40 as their other USAicon made limited production ammo. Even 40 years ago when I bought my first Krag is wasn't inexpensive, but was a tad more common. Now it is mainly found new from on-line retailers. As a regular shooter it really is of most use to the reloader. Considering that the Krag was only produced for less than a decade, and by .303 standards in minuscule numbers, it is somewhat surprising to find it still loaded commercially at all.

I think if you intend to have, shoot and enjoy a Kragicon to it's fullest, you need to be reloading for it. Otherwise the cost of ammo may prove prohibitive...
