International Harvester M-1 Garands
I have an opportunity to purchase an International Harvester M-1 Garand. This is not my first Garand, but I am very interested in acquiring this manufacturer based upon the lower numbers produced. Can anyone tell me any additional info regarding this particular manufacturer? Thanks for your replies - Thunderbolt

The very end of production numbers seem to be the most desireable.

Thunderbolt,
There are a number of interesting variants of the IHC's that are definitly worth looking for. First is the IHC/SA Arrowhead (Early 444xxxx range), then the IHC/SA Postage stamp (also early 444xxxx range, just usually a little later than the arrowheads), then the 4.6 million gap letters and then the 5.1/5.2 million gap letters. Last but not least is the IHC/HRA Postage stamp variant (5.2 million). CSP used to have a really neat page that showed an illustration of all the variations but i cant find where it is now. If you want a copy of it Email me at Kenny27@aol.com and I'll scan you a copy. Hope this helps...

A lot of these went to Iran in the late 50's and early 60's, so there are even fewer in circulation than you might imagine. Interesting history of the production of this manufacturer, for sure.

A couple of things
IHC is very desirable as you mention because of the low serial numbers and variants. Take a look at the stock and hopefully it is correct. That is a difficult item to acquire later if you are looking for correct.

First thing you should do is join the Garand Collectors Asso. ( GCA). Dave McClain wrote an excellent article (IHC Receiver Variations ). It can be found in the Spring 2009 GCA Journal which is still available from the GCA. Go to The Garand Collectors Association Supply Shack and at the bottom of the page you will see a download for an order form for available back issues. While there go through the web site and see what the GCA has to offer. It would be $ 25.00 well spent if you have an interest in the M1 Garand.
