Removing varnish??
What is the safest way to remove varnish from a vintage walnut stock? Will the home depot strippers work without damaging the wood? Any help would be appreciated.

i use aircrat remover, hot water and a SOS pad, will clean up the mess when your done,
try a paint scraper afet it sits for 15 min, if its real thick, spray it on, the stick the stock in a plastic trash bag, and let sit for 1/2 hour.

Poly Suppa Strippa gel and circa 1878 furniture stripper are both good choices if you have to remove varnish. For cleaning though, default to milder solutions first like soapy water and work your way up to the big guns lest you damage patina.
