Hello trenchgun fans. I just thought I could mention some spottings of U.S. trench guns in one book I had read as well as in 2-3 episodes of the same TV program series.
The book sighting is 'The brothers Bulger : how they terrorized and corrupted Boston for a quarter century' by Howie Carr (ISBN0446576514). In the middle of the book is a photo of one of the books characters in the custody of state or federal law enforcement officers, one that is awkwardly holding a Winchester model 1897 trench gun as he is escorting the suspect. The photo caption mentions that year as 1969, so I think that it was surplus stock sold or given to law enforcement in the postwar years, and it does retain the heat shield and bayonet mount. The book is very interesting and I think is an inspiration for the recent movie 'The Departed'.
The television program sighting is in 2-3 episodes of the first season of the old 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman!' show, where the title character (played by Louise Lasser) is a hostage in a police/perp situation. At least 2 police officers (including a secondary character in the series) are armed with trenchguns, though I have forgotten if they are model 1897 or model 12s. They do have the heatshield and bayonet mounts.
I just thought I could pass out some trenchgun minutiae to other fellow fans.
