Scope-Ring Alignment: A Critical Accuracy Factor
As the owner of a firearm test range, I mount dozens of scopes each year. I get to see first hand how they perform, as well as the performance of scopes mounted by others. The two main complaints I hear about scopes usually center around those that fail to remain sighted in or group poorly on target. These complaints are usually very well founded. Most complaints about scope mounting are the direct result of poor scope-ring alignment and the accuracy-robbing stresses inherent between metal parts. These stresses pull and twist, causing the scope to move and to become misaligned. The scope never really settles down as bullet point-of-impact changes over time or even as a target group is being fired.

M91/30 stock rear site removed, and you get a tapered dovetail! WANT TO MOUNT A SCOPE
Attachment 29061Attachment 29062How do Hound!
Just got on board today and have been looking for info to mount a long eye relief scope on a M91/30 Mosin Nagant 1943 Rifle. Found out recently that if you remove the pins that hold the rear site in place and remove the lower portion of site mount, you end up with a tapered Dovetail mount! The Digital measures, front is approx.@ the widest Part of Dove tail is .4380", Small is .4210. The widest rear of dove mount reading is .4815". ( Can't get an accurate rear small dovetail measure from the fat barrel design) So if the diff. from max. front to max. rear = .0435". Thousands, is this going to be a problem with putting standard 1" dove tail scope rings on? Not sure what height yet, but will update this thread when I figure the correct height and scope into the mix. Maybe a 2-7x32? OR, what would you suggest? Would it be better to lightly file .020 at an angle on the FIXED side of the rings to allow the ring to square up with the barrel? Thanks for any help! Looked for three days thru forums without much help, besides the direct dovetail mounting info. Figure that would be the most significant method of fixing the scope without an aluminum (Cheap breakable) weaver rail with 6 holes in it, just don't think it will hold up!!!I was shooting those awesome 7.62X54R Rounds & WOW, @ 300 yards and hitting a 1x3 on edge with 3 apples in front and nicking the middle apple that put bullet DEAD center to what I was aiming at with IRON SITES, Damn bullet went right threw old board and board never moved! Hell of a gun! And I bought 2 at the same time when I went to Big 5 at a cost of $109.95EACH! Thanks for any help BIG GUY! Gary Don't EVER Attachment 29061
