1903 sight base
How is the rear sight base attached to the barrel of an '03?
If I buy a barrel without the sight base, that is in good shape otherwise, how much trouble would it be to remove the sight base on my worn barrel and put it on the new one?
Thanks

They are indexed to the barrel with a very small diameter 1" long pin/rod set lengthwise on the barrel. Tthere is also a cross pin on the bottom the base which is rather difficult to remove, though can be done with proper size punch. This pin may have to be replaced once removed though...it is not hard to find just a simple pin though. Go slow and it will slide off with just a bit of coaxing and liberal application of penetrating oil.

Remove the cross pin. Use a copper pipe to drift the base off towards the muzzle. This is not an easy project.
