"Rooster" - By the serial number given, it is likely you have a U.S. Model 1898 rifle that has had its original 30 inch barrel shortened. It would have been originally assembled in the Fall of 1900. The barrel and stock alterations were done after it left the 'Service'.
It is likely to be in .30-40 Krag caliber and have "U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1898" stamped on the left-side of the receiver.
A Norwegian Krag would be in 6.5X55mm caliber and have a Year/Date on the top of the 'receiver-ring'.
Pictures of your Krag would beget more information.
