In Canada we used the white tape out of the first aid kits. Applied in any patern to break up the outline of the rifle.

I have never seen a L1A1 with field expediant winter camo. Could anyone post a picture of one? I would like to see one.

Rifles used in Norway with the winter sling fittings. That white mine tape was the other stuff they used to wrap around kit. On the basis that white mine lane-marking tape wasn't a lot of good in snowy Norway!
