Mounting a scope on a P14 action
A mate of mine shoots a P14 modded for target shooting (308 target barrel). Unfortunately he can no longer use a peep sight and sling so would like to mount a scope. Whats the best way to do this on a p14 action?
or where would be a good place to ask?
Also he needs a new trigger assembly as its seems worn out, where to get this?
thanks

I bought one from S&K, for our club rifle, it fits between the ears but needs a bit of fettling but is a sturdy mount, would be better in steel though.
See link below, you need to click on the Military link and the price list link, should open a page with various insta mounts available.

Anything that relies on only the rear-sight axis screw hole for retention is suspect.
There are a few issues:
Most P-14s, and PARTICULARLY Eddystone ones are as hard as the proverbial Hobs.
I did a couple many years ago and ended up using a tungsten-carbide burr running at about 30,000 RPM to cut through the hard skin of the breech ring, just so I could burn out HSS drill bits in the core metal. And then there was the tapping!
And never mind what all of that was doing to the internal stresses in the breech ring.
If you want a stable mount that does not require drilling into the breech ring, you will need to find a STEEL base that attaches to the rear sight "pocket". As noted above, just relying on the sight axis screw holes for retention is dubious at best. If the rifle has been "sporterised", ("ears" trimmed, etc.) already, then do what you can with what remains.
If the bottom surface of the "pocket" is intact, you could run a couple of "supplementary" screws through the new mount and into the steel underneath. Or, you could be a bit more "cheesy" and just bond the base in place with stainless-steel "Devcon" epoxy. This stuff is so tough you can machine it like metal after it sets; it is NOT cheap, however.
Anything much heavier than the lovely little Leupold 2-7 variable may be too heavy and cause "inertia" issues.
If the rifle in question is otherwise unmodified, leave it alone. Most P-14s have very "used" barrels, unless they "left the service" early and have been looked after with great care ever since. In my experience, most P-14 barrels are "sad" to say the least.
If it has been "got at", then I guess a judgement has to be made as to how much loot is worth expending on the old girl.

SSJ - Send me a PM with your email address. I should be able to find a trigger assembly for you in my tool box of P14/M17 parts.
