Magazine Lee Metford Carbine Mk1
A mate of mine stumbled across this one the other day and sent me a couple of pics to ID it for him.
It can only be a Lee Metford Carbine Mk1 because of the markings being high up on the left side of the butt socket and evidence of where the D loop was removed sometime after March 1896.
The book says that after the pattern was approved on 29th Sept 1894, 13,926 of these were made from 1895 to 1897 at RSAF Enfield.
My question is... has anyone got or seen one manufactured in 1894?

Mass production of the Lee Metford Cavalry Carbine commenced during the 1894-95 fiscal year, a run of 50 trials carbines was produced during the 1892-93 fiscal year, and a further 100 during the 1893-94 fiscal year.

I am learning a little about the trials carbines, I know the first lot were marked on the right side of the receiver. From the book, the production model was the only one with the markings on the upper left of the butt socket, so this example must be one

Got curious and dug these out of the gunsafe. The 1894 has the D-ring removed, no clearing rod, and several inspection stamps below. Butt-disk marked to the 5th Lancers.
The 1895 has D-ring and clearing rod intact, no subsequent inspection stamps, and is marked M&D with butt-disk marked RCA (Canadian?).
