Perhaps heat treatment to harden the shoulders?

BP is absolutely correct. It is the induction hardened locking shoulders. The only hardened part of the body.
We used to test the hardness of these shoulders with No4 and 5 rifles undergoing Base Workshop repair using the old IZOD impact hardnes test if anyone remembers that very simple and visible method of testing. Not that old really......, still in use at Uni in the 70's!

Thank you for the replies. I was initially worried that someone had drilled it out and re-welded them.
Now I know I should not really use it as it is also stamped DP

I bought 4 rusty receivers for $100 including shipping and transfer fee. Probably not that great of a deal, but at least the others will be usable.
The bolts and other bits will end up costing more, would have been cheaper to buy a sporterized rifle and rebarrel that!
