The Germans used a 1-9999 system. When they reached 9999 they started over again at 1a, 2a, 3a etc. All the way to 9999a and then 1b. Get the idea? J.P. Sauer was the largest manufacturer of K98's (I think). Good luck, sounds like a nice K98.

Is there a letter after the ser nr? If not it was made in Jan 1940.
Sauer made approx 215,000+ in 1940.

It's a c because the Germans used small case, not caps. That makes your rifle the 35,639th rifle built in 1940. Probably in Feb?
