M39 B Barrel
Looking at purchasing an M39 B barrel. Looks like a good one just want to make sure I am not over paying. Below are some pictures from the seller. In two of the pictures the crown looks like there might be some issues, but looking at both "bad" areas in the other picture shows it is fine, so I am not worried about that. Stock is said to have no patches or cracks, looks like a scratch on the right side near the rear sight but overall, dam good looking stock. Only other concern is the seller say the left side of the magazine has some pitting that has been blued over at refurbishment. Last picture shows it, but the other picture of that side of the receiver doesn't really looks like it is that bad. Bore is bright and shinny with sharp riffling. Last bit of info... seller says there is remnants of the plum color on the barrel.

That information is easily attainable with a Google search. That's why I asked what HE is asking as your concern was over paying, which sounds to me like you didn't buy it yet. I wouldn't pay a dime over $450.00 and that would be for a nice one.

Sorry I miss understood, I though you meant what was MY question. He is asking 450.
I did do a bunch of searching and could not find anything\threads with current dates. Also checked Gunbroker but with different makers, B barrels, no maker and antiques the prices seems all over the place. A lot of the Gunbroker stuff looked like it was just a matter of who was bidding, similar guns would have like a 100 or more difference.
I figured I could get a current and "normalized" version of what the value is. I am looking at keeping this gun so I guess I was also hoping to get some info on if a B barrel is a good choice.
So looks like you are thinking that would be a little high. Thanks for your reply, you have also helped me in the past and I appreciate you feedback.

The above would be considered very good for Classic, but much closer to good in my estimate. Expect refinish over pitting on receivers and mags for any
Finnish Mosin Nagant, as they were all salvaged from
Russian/Soviet guns. They have traded from $4-800 on Gunbroker over the past ninety days, with better condition and antique receivers at the top end, and around $525 for average.
Thanks for the reply Martin. I did see the ones on Classic and was wondering how "market" accurate their prices were since it seems they have caused a sharp raise in the price of M39s. Seems like there is a premium on B and no maker guns. Seller is asking basically what Classic is for a B barrel (450), difference is I can talk directly and get pictures so I get a better idea of exactly what I am getting, seems like there is some value add there.
Good info on the pitting and condition estimate I wasn't sure if the pitting would cause it to be valued much lower. You have a GREAT looking representative!
Thanks again.

$450 isn't outrageous for the above gun. But it is near top dollar for the condition, IMO.

Just to help my understanding, what in your opinion would mark the gun down?
blueing ware
not a plum barrel
maybe the pitting on the mag

B-barrel M39's are considered to be post-war assemblies, and the one which you are considering does have what is reported to be a 'square jointed' post-war stock splice. But the gun seems to have plenty of handling wear, so it could have been used in training, guard duty, or similar.
For milsurps in general, appearance and condition dictate value. It's not a rare variant, though it is desirable. So, it is worth something significant, just not top dollar. It's not the worst looking gun, but very far from the nicest.
