Gras/Chassepot Interchageability
Good Morning. Looking to restore a Chassepot that needs a stock. Rifle has a sporterized stock that still has the barrel bands and triggerguard from the Chassepot. Will the Gras stock work and can I also use the Gras barrel bands. Thanks, Randy

I think everything is the same between the two except for the bolt and the chamber. I have a Gras that was originally a Chassepot. Many of them were upgraded to Gras configuration.

Thanks. Out of 90+views, between two sites, you are the first to answer. I too have a Gras but was hesitant to get the Chassepot. However, took the plunge and am bidding on Ebay for a Gras stock. Thanks for the encouragement. Randy

The question of interchanging parts is mixed. The stock needed much work from my Dremel to fit the trigger group/spring, the trigger guard/screws different lengths, and the tang reinforcing plates were not the same length. From the exterior you would be hard pressed to see any but one issue. It is the Chassepot's tang being much narrower than the Gras' and when viewed from above you can see a clear gap between the tang and the stock. That said, I am pleased with the surgery and total cost was about $90. When added to the $250 for the sporterized Chassepot, I am happy. Also replaced the rubber bolt gasket and firing needle with about $5 in parts. Randy
