please help identify
I have a m1 carbine, saginaw receiver serial number 3318xxx, barrel says underwood 8-44, cartousch says ria eb, rear sight is stamped r.i. co. it does not have a reimport stamp, can you guys help give me some info on what i have? when it was made and would the value be raised if i got a saginaw barrel from the same period what date stamp should i get? thanks any other info about the rifle would be great. thanks

You have a typical post war rebuild carbine. the 8-44 Underwood barrel was made 3 or 4 months after Underwood quit making carbines.

Do I remember that Underwood also had the post-WWII carbine rebuild contract?

Saginaw Steering Gear S.G. made their own barrels did not date them. Your serial number would date to the early fall of 1943 about October or so. Your carbine as stated has gone through a rebuild and that is when the barrel and the rear sight were changed out. Most likely many of the internal parts were also changed then too. hth

To answer your question, very little. To buy a Saginaw barrel you would have half the price of another carbine. Enjoy your canbine as it is and save to buy another carbine (maybe with a Saginaw barrel).
