Finish on Arisaka 99
I have an Arisaka 99, intact mum, all matching numbers. The finish isn't great, in my opinion. Is what is shown in the attached photos what others have called "patina", or is this something else (rust or corrosion)?

My two cents, it is both. Wood looks very nice, intact mum,oil her up and preserve intact for the next generation.

John,
Looks like some mild pitting also... I also vote for oiling and keeping as is...
At most, light polish with steel wool and oil to remove rust... but I wouldn't take it very far...
Are you planning on shooting it? Most of mine, don't get shot. Therefore I actually cleaned them up as mentioned above, and then lightly greased them..... oil doesn't last forever...

I have shot it once, but don't plan on making it a regular shooter. Thanks for the advice.

The photos may not show the true deal but it looks to me like it has already been cleaned up a bit and what is left is pitting, especially that barrel end shot. It doesn't look bad as is and some further light cleaning should help it some.
If you want to look at one that had quite a bit of surface rust but little to no pitting, I have before and after cleaning shots of a rifle I picked up at an auction a couple of months ago here:
