    Australian Training Pamphlets

Below is a selection of original Australianicon Pamphlets for the L1A1 rifles. The 1961 edition was a modified copy of the Britishicon 1959 3B Pamphlet, there are two printers versions. After that the Australians produced their own versions of Pamphlets.

I'm doing some research into the variations, editions and amendments to the manuals. If you have an Australian manual could you please check and see if it conforms to one of these or is different or has dated amendments.

    Merry Christmas

1961 Manual (Version 1, Printed by John Skase & Company Pty. Ltd.-Printers-Melbourne)

1961 Manual (Version 2, Printed by Department of Supply, Central Drawing Office, Maribyrnong. W.3.)

    1971 Manual

    Ah! Memories!!

Part of the essential bed-time reading for every keen young digger!

I don't quite date back to the first editions, though.

Always interesting information in the manuals and the older ones always have surprises in there such as the photos and what was 'standard' at the time like pattern 37 webbing, Mk 2 helmets, and battledress uniforms. It looks strange when they are armed with modern (at the time) L1A1 rifles.

Well finally got around to having a look, the 1961 edition is the same, but I have 2 copies of the 1971 edition, one with amendments to pages 1-5,1-13,9-1 and 12-3, all with A/L1 marked at bottom of page.

I was surprised at how many pam's I had and found some I thought I'd lost including the RAEME MAINTENANCE SCALE for the L1A1.
1956 Cadet training, now that took me back, funny though the books were dealing with the No.4, but we had the SMLE.

The earliest seem to be 1937 Small Arms Training, others covering most Small Arms from pistol, sub machine carbines, mines and booby traps, vehicles. A/T up to 106RCL, you name it.....maybe I should make a list.

Found one about defence against Chemical , Biological and Nuclear Warfare......better read that one again.

Thanks for taking the time to dig the manuals out, I think I have a copy of the 1971 edition with the A/L1 amendment in it.

Since Ive managed to find my copy of the 1961 edition printed by Department of Supply, Central Drawing Office. Ive found it contains 6 Amendments (Amdt 1 Mar-62, Amdt 2 Dec-62, Amdt 3 ?, Amdt 4 Mar-64, Amdt 5 ?, Amdt 6 Dec-65) Unfortunately I can't determine the dates of Amdt 3 or Amdt 5. But it does have the amendment for the L2A1 Rifle which is amendment 2, December 1962. Also noted is this pamphlet has terrible dark images, its like they photocopied the John Skase & Company Pty pam, rather than send it out to a printer and may indicate this is the later reprint? (done on the cheap)

I would be interested to see the RAEME MAINTENANCE SCALE for the L1A1

Thanks Jim, that's a lovely early copy of the Manual, Ive got a copy of it, but it doesn't have the blue covers, so its nice to see it complete. Its a hefty volume.
