In profile it's VERY close to a heavy or medium Palma profile except with the Mauser reinforce instead of a cylinder section.

    From memory:
1.250" at the receiver, reduce to 1.0 -.950" over chamber and taper ring to. 900" at 26".

    Thanks!
I'll see if my barrel maker can work with that.

    M82 Barrel Drawing

    Hello,

I just made a quick M82 barrel profile in Solidworks based on the most reliable info I was able to find.

It looks like quite a few of us have M82 projects on the go.

    Enjoy.

Can I ask is the M-82 action the same as the commercial 1200 Parker Hales as one day when my 22/250 P&H's barrel is kaput I would not mind making a clone M-82 as the action is super strong. But for me I would get the barrel customed from say Bartlein as I have allot of people say to have one turned down after it has been rifled that it stresses the barrel what is the consensus on that one. TIA

Same action,so you're all good there.
Sure barrels can be turned down to suit, but not all smiths will be geared up to do so.The easiest option would be to order the profile you want.

    Cinders,

I have never heard of rifling a barrel after it has been contoured. Can you imagine a lightweight sporter barrel or most profiles for that matter not twisting and distorting during the rifling process.

When a barrel blank is button rifled, the button is pulled (usually) through the bore, you need the rigidity of the extra metal to keep everything straight.

For the M82 profile, I honestly would not worry too much at all as it is really thick and heavy (>4lbs). Most of my barrel blanks are 1.2" diameter, so it won't take much metal removal to get to the M82 profile.

Here in PA you can still find the Australianicon L81A1 teardown barrel for sale in the 300~ 350 dollar region. I see them at shows, offered up by folks who bought them back when they sold for 60 dollars from SARCO and flipping them. They generally sell, though I do not know the actual sell prices.

From what I understand they work well with generic Mauser actions and shoot 130 to 175 Gr bullets well, having a 1-12 twist.

My friend had his barrel turned down on his 300 Weatherby Mag it had a fair bit milled off it and it did not seem to do it any good as before it shot like a demon so boring to shoot was it we called it "The Business" but not afterwards wonder if it upset the harmonics, but shooting his 460 Weatherby Mag did the business on us......!
