Anyone else with an ar in 6.8 spc?
Just wondering if anyone else has an AR in 6.8 SPC and what they think of it. What ammo do you use/prefer? I've had one since 2006 and think it's a big step up in performance over the 5.56/.223 chambering. To date I've taken 22 Deer, 6 Hogs and numerous other Varmints with mine, all one shot kills. I've tried all the loaded ammo and suitable bullets that were available at the time I got it and it likes SSA 110gr Sierra Game King loads or they're handloaded equivalent the best so thats what I've stuck with. The Rem. 115gr OTM's had the best terminal ballistics but were the least accurate. I assembled the upper myself using parts from various makers, the barrel is a E.R. Shaw (model 1 sales) with the early 1-9.5'' twist. Most all I see now have barrels with a 1-12'' twist. It's boringly accurate with bullets or ammo it likes and the average 5 shot group measures less than an inch at 100 yds. Muzzle velocity with handloads using 110gr Sierra bullets over xxgr IMR 3031 powder are a consistant 2605 fps. The only down side to the 6.8 chambering is the price and availability of loaded ammo or components but this is no problem for me as I only use it for hunting.

Personally, I use 115gr soft points with 26gr of H335 and Federal Match LR primers in Remington cases. It's already proved it's accurate and taken a deer to boot.
However, Since I assembled a 6.5 Grendel my 6.8 has pretty much been a safe queen. The 6.5 just seem to do things better and has the capability to reach further out with a larger bullet.
Guts, I was born and raised in Sioux Falls. Where do you live in Dakota? I retired in Alabama from the military. I can't hack -26F with wind that cuts through much any clothes. Plus our deer season runs from the 26th of November to the 31st of January.

I am a fan of the 6.8 SPC ever since I talked to a Special Forces guy that used one in Afghanistan. While MK 262 Mod 1, 77 grain works well also, the 6.8 performs very well from a 14.5 inch barrel, something the M855 fails miserably at.
In a perfect world, I would have an A1 style 16" carbine in 6.8 SPC. That is if I wa s rich enough to stock up 2,000 rounds like i have with M193.
