Did you try acetone? Furniture stripper should work too.

I have used hot water and mild detergent with no ill effects to remove linseed oil and residual cosmoline.

I believe you will find the residual BLO compatible with the Tom's Mix. Use a soft-bristled nylon scrub brush to work it into the wood, rub well and repeat as desired. Please post pictures.

Not certain how it would work on BLO. but I have had good luck on cosmoline and grunge with Murphys oil soap ,warm water and a tooth brush.
