Savage No.4 Mk 1*
Finally got the new bolt from Springfield Sporters to replace the missing one on a Savage #4, Mk1* I with a 2 groove barrel I was given about a month ago. New bolt came with a #1 bolt head and headspaced okay as received.
This Savage is late enough in it's history that it only has the "L" backsight calibrated for 300 and 600 yards, so it shot a bit high at 100 but grouped tolerably using the Prvi Partisan 174 grain FMJ ammo that AIM Surplus had a while back.
Freebies usually aren't free and this one was no exception as I had to replace the bolt, magazine, front sight protector and the screw from the rear of the trigger guard. Total outlay $84 US for parts.
My 1948 Faz #4 Mk 1 is a bit more accurate, but this one's a keeper too.

Thanks guys,
'taint me, it's the rifle. Since that range session, I've done a bit more work on the rifle. Read a post by Ed Horton on another board where he explains in detail how to properly adjust the "king screw" bushing.
I got a scale and measured the force needed to pull the muzzle away from the forestock and it was only 1.7 pounds, so I shortened the bushing a couple thousandths at a time and squared the ends up. Now the force required is right around 6 pounds and the book says 2 to 7.
Took it back to the range. Had to shorten up to 50 yards due to faulty lighting at the 100 yard target points (indoor range), but after changing the front sight blade to longer ones several times, the following group was recorded. The flyer was due to a flinch. Shoulder was really hurting from putting 20 rounds downrange with a friend's Mosin Nagant M44 the day before while wearing a T-shirt. Dang them things got some boot to 'em with that Bulgarian "Heavy Ball" ammo.
I put on a jacket and fired the last of the ammo I had with me on the record target. The low flyer was #1 and I concentrated a lot better on the other 9. Only 50 yards, vs 100 for the other target, but this Savage #4 Mk 1* is really a keeper. It now shoots better than the 1948 Fazakerly.
