    War Finish.....

I posted in the watering hole about my latest addition to the workshop, I was just fitting the tail stock to the other lathe I purchased and leaning over noticed something on the back of the bed in stencil letters, WAR FINISH,

Must admit the finish on some of it is very dark, almost a rough texture too, I,ve heard of War Finish but never expected it to be on a small lathe, just wonder what dictated the finish and on what items ??

Interesting - I've heard of "War Finish" being stamped on Webley revolvers (as a way of indicating they were normally finished to a much higher standard, but there's a war on, you see...), but never on any other equipment. It makes sense, though.

We had a bunch of rheostats in the school physics department that were marked 'War Finish' as well. No doubt they wanted to reassure future users that their regular product didn't look that bad.

I've seen Economy Finish on branded items too.

What era are those items from? It can see a post-war Britishicon company not wanting to appear too extravagent in otherwise austere times stamping something like that on their products.
