Anyone's ancestor? Pvt. Marcey Mitchell, veteran of Spanish-American War
Does anyone recognize the name of Private Marcey Mitchell? He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, and my grandfather served on his funeral detail. My grandfather was Sgt. Robert Merill, Troop M, 5th Cavalry, 1912-1919. His unit went with General Pershing into Mexico in 1916-1917. I found this document in his service papers.

Interesting. I did a couple of funerals in Georgia when I was stationed at Albany in 1970. Advice: Drinking and funerals don't mix.

Today I came across some information about Pvt. Marcy M. Mitchell.
(Cf. pp. 43 and 545 of http://archive.org/details/recordoffourthne00jers )
He was a resident of Jersey City, NJ. During the Spanish-American War, he served in Company I (commanded by Capt. A. LaRue Christie) of the newly formed Fourth Regiment, New Jersey National Guard Volunteer Infantry. This new regiment was established by orders dated June 30, 1898, and it was entirely organized and mustered into service by July 18, 1898. Pvt. Mitchell was discharged on Sept. 13, 1898, at Camp Voorhees, Sea Girt, NJ, after serving for less than two months. Per the funeral orders in my grandfather's service papers, he was interred at Arlington Cemetery on Jan. 13, 1915. My grandfather was one of the eight privates in the firing party.

I've also done my share of funerals for the regiments I served...3 x firing party and 2 x carry party, one time mourners...
