How to salvage an old Springfield Model 1903 rifle into a 22 rim fire
about eight or nine years ago I bought a 1903 barreled action (cheap). The low
numbered action was manufactured in 1915 and the SA barrel was dated 1921. The
barrel was burned out, not possible to salvage the bore. The receiver only had about 40%
of finish left over. Starting to look like "junk".
I found a man (there are others too) that installs quality 22 rim fire liners and a extension
for the liner at the rear of the barrel. Just have to buy a Springfield 22 rim fire bolt (they
are not difficult to find) I bought one of the later M2 rim fire bolts that has the adjustable headspace.
Once complete, I was very impressed at the targets, this is an accurate combination. I did
remove a coil to improve the trigger pull.Attachment 64117Attachment 64118Attachment 64120Attachment 64121

22 rim fire liner
The man that I bought my from was Ray Stora of Matthews NC, he also sold 1903 barrels with the liner and extension for $80. I doubt he still is doing this work now, but any good gunsmith that can install a barrel liner could do this job.
Years ago I installed a heavy 1/2 inch diameter liner in a junk Remington rolling block
rifle from South America plus some custom work on the action and made the stock&fore-endAttachment 64150Attachment 64151Attachment 64152

Is this a clip fed or a single shot ?
I have a couple of Numrich '03 / .22LR conversion kits that are fun , but the loosness of the slip-in liner in the bores doesn't allow for great accuracy . Makes for fun plinkers , though . I have an assortment of WW2 trainers when accuracy is needed.

Chris, The Springfield M2 floor plate and magazine should work in this conversion. I have a Numrich modified 1903A3 trigger guard with mag catch but have not trield any magazines
for feeding.
The Numrich 22 RF conversions for the M1903 and Lee Enfield Mark 111 were never accurate but worth a lot on the collector market if complete with tool even better

I would guess the M2 set up would work ( well duh ) . The Numrich kit didn't go that route , though. Both of mine are complete and they have the modified A3 floorplates . They came with H&R 7 rd mags , but I use the H&R Reising 10 rounders as I have three M65s . One of the kits had a minor modification to the bolt . A bit of brass / bronze weld was added to the front tip of the bottom center rib of the bolt . This would allow the rib to set lower between the feed lips of the mag . I do not know if this was factory or afterward as both bolts seem to work equally well in all rifle / mag combos tried .
I need to find a couple of National Ords on the cheep to put these in as a collector wanted my last LN more than I did. I do have a late 03 and early A3 with pin stocks that might be canidates , though.
