Was chatting to a guy at Bisley on Sunday - he is selling .22RF semi-auto (SORRY!! "self-loading") L1A1 replicas by Imbel.
Got me thinking.....
Does anybody know if there has ever been a modification to make the FN originals into single shot straight-pull type rifles for the UK market?
I'm not that familiar with the L1A1 mechanism so don't even know if it would be possible.
There are a number of UK guys making a UK spec M16/AR15 type rifle with varying degrees of success. They remove the gas tube and use barrels that are not drilled for the gas port, then either use the standard charging handle as the main method for cycling the bolt or solutions to provide RH side charging with modified bolts.
Thanks in advance for any information.
Andy

I'm not sure that you even have to have an unported barrel because the UK made .223" bolt action CAM rifle simply used M-16 barrels. But as I understand it, if the sum of the whole L1A1 is converted to straight pull, then it's a big NO.

Oxfordandy,
Have you any more details regarding the .22,s the guy is selling ? I turned down a straight pull L1A1
(7.62mm) many years ago (lack of funds) , and been looking for one since. but like the idea of a .22
Regarding conversions from semi to single shot you cant.
Anything that was semi auto after the ban, would be classed as section 5, and you cant convert a section 5, because once its section 5, it stays section 5, bit like a Deact, once its deactivated its a deact, once you start messing with them then in theory you attemting to convert a deactivated weapon, and your looking at doing 5 years poridge.
The only way and that is why they are so expensive is to produce new parts and build one as a straightpull, or if someone has a load of new old stock parts they could be used in a build, in theory there is no such thing as a section 5 part, (this may change in the future) but I would not like to be in front of the beak trying to explain this.
Each rifle is made from a selection of parts from a variety of "Imperial" or Commonwealth "original spec" sources and some German engineered proprietary conversion/replacement parts.
So these are NOT individual rifles that have been converted.
They would be unable to supply a rifle that is completely made from a single original as this would have been originally classified as a Section 5 firearm and cannot therefore be re-worked to a Section 1 firearm (as per other posts above)
They would be unable to provide a rifle where all the original parts are from a UK manufacturer (although from different rifles).
When they refer to new "unissued" rifles on the website, these are made up the same way from unused parts of various origin. These are significantly more expensive than the refurbed/reconditioned used part models.
The rifles have been inspected by local police firearms officers (Met), that they carry german proof marks and that he would be prepared to have them re-proofed in the UK if asked. They also offer to supply "a formal note from the FSS that it is Section 1"....I guess this means Forensic Science Service?
I'm not sure if this is one of the above but I did find this during the course of my research.......if any body recognises themselves (or a friend?), I'd be interested in hearing about their experiences of the rifle shown and it's accuracy:
