Serial numbers on NO.8 rifles
Just (finally) got hold of a No.8, though I assume its a bitser / put together. It has a normal serial number on bolt but various part also have a CR number (CR324 i think) what is the CR number please? I thought maybe Cadet Rifle??

Nope........ It's the old Ministry of Supply codification sequence when they got involved with production thus
B1, the VAOS category
CR, the MoS codification category
1234, the part number section
GA or SA or other letters that denote something else.
So the part number of the part would be BAND, upper, assy. B1/CR-1234SA

The CR number is, in effect he drawing number for the item in question.
A, GA, SA stands for: Assembly, General Assembly and Sub-Assembly.
Generally, drawing numbers were not allocated to items until the development was completed, then the design was "Sealed" and handed over from the Design Authority to the Services, who had the Quality Division administer the drawings.
In this case, "CR" meant "Carbines and Rifles".

CR324 is the part number for the No.8 receiver. Every military-bound No.8 had that number stamped on the butt socket.
