p14 Locking Lug size problem
Hi all, first post and all. I purchased a P14 on Friday and since then have been reading everything I can on them. The receiver and bolt do not match, the rifle was manufactured in 1917 and my concern is that left locking lug on the bolt measures approx .640". The bolt is also from a Winchester but the serial number is 109443 (I guess about halfway through production) but the rifles serial number is 208131 - almost the end of production. My question is how could I tell if the lugs are supposed to be in the .7** range or the .6** range. Or if not possible if the left lug is bearing. Thank you in advance.

have you tried to fit the bolt into the action?

oh yeah, the bolt closes no problem but from what I understand the early bolt with the smaller lug would close in a later action meant for the larger lug

I think I solved my problem with a little lipstick I applied an even coat of my wifes lipstick to both lugs and closed the bolt on a snap cap. The lipstick on both lugs was mostly wiped off so I'm going to assume both lugs are bearing. At least I hope they are because I just put 60 rounds through it. wow, I was pleasantly surprised, that rifle can shoot!

The thing is it is a first type bolt, what I as worried about is that I had a second type action.

DID THE LIP STICK RUB OF THE LEFT LUG [OR TOP LUG]?
you could pore melted wax in the reciver tiped upside down on its back, ,and gentley pry it out and measure. did you say you measured the lug? does your bolt have an * or a star---charles

Yeah, the lipstick rubbed off of both lugs evenly as I applied it to both. I did measure the lug and it measured .640, I do have a star in a circle on both the bolt and receiver.
