Hell, I could've told them .300 win mag will reach out "and touch someone" at extended ranges and punch holes in s@&t too, for half the price of course..

30 amu
In 1956 the US Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) was established and much testing was done over the years. The 300 Ackley Mag was used and both Winchester and Remington provided the cases (headstamped WCC 60 and REM-UMC 300) photos show some examplesAttachment 49762

It's not like the idea of using the .300WM is new for the M24 platform. That's why it was procured as a long action in the first place. Barrel, magazine and bolt swap. But without the hassle of allocating funds for a whole new weapon.

The Stryker BDE in AK was just issued the M2010's. I will try to post some pictures of them latter. It is a very impressive weapon.

So the system that was current (NATO round) is being phased out, this will mean the opposition is getting the drift and keeping out of a reliable hit range of this cartridge I mean how scary would it be to not even hear the report of the rifle and your comrade in arms h**d explodes so stay way way away from known hot spots.
In all seriousness what does this mean for the current longer ranged weapons systems like the Barrett line 50, 416 and the 375 Chey Tac are these now role specific as the 300 Win Mag offers a more portable system for the operator with the added benefits of increases accuracy and longer range.
I have just seen footage from a developer that after years of research and trials a 50 cal steerable round has been developed so as long as the operator keeps you in the cross hairs the round will follow you and pin you to the ground permanently bit like a Milan and a Tank scenario
The round is a sabot type with the miniature processor contained in the progie and fins, this is quite a leap as when you think of the rather violent launch, the rotational forces applied to the unit it is quite amazing how fast the unit inputs data and alters the flight path whilst keeping it on track to the intended target.

M2010
All of those exotic rounds and weapons are sexy but expensive, heavy, and heavy recoiling. They are good for SOCOM or some mission specific cases, but no good for your average infantry sniper. Her needs something portable, accurate and reliable. He gets issued ammo. He does not set at home and reload it, nor is he necessarily a gun nut. A good buddy of mine was a sniper in VN. He knew very little about ballistics. I tried to talk ballistics with him, and he did not know enough to make it interesting. He was a great shot, and very patient.

M2010 Sniper rifles
Here are some pictures of the M2010 sniper system. It replaced the M240. The M2010 is a Remington long action with a SS 5 grove barrel, in 300 Win Mag. The Scope ia a Leupold with a hours reticle. The soldiers are from the 172nd Stryker BDE in AK.

Why is Remington tarting up ALL their new firearms! More subtle markings would suffice..

What you gotta know is that the sniper is going to grab 2 or 3 rattle cans of paint and cammo that thing up as his first order of business. That big black scoped rifle is what we call a target indecator.
