spanish m1916 not feeding shells

I have spanish m1916 that will not chamber a shell without binding..you can drop shell in chamber and run bolt up and it is smooth...you can run the shell in and out very smooth..but if you try to load from the magazine it gets in a bind and you have to shove the shell in..it leaves scratches on bottom of casing..is it the magazine spring? seems as you go to chamber shell the back end drops..any ideas would be helpful as this gun shoot great..thanks
