Mauser Oberndorf Sporter With Nazi Proof

Attachment 14319Attachment 14323Attachment 14320Attachment 14321Attachment 14322I hope someone can help identify this rifle! 8mm Oberndorf sporter, early variation, pre-WWI, Crown BU Proofed and serial range 51,xxx, matching numbers, with claw mounted 4x Germanicon scope. The rifle is reblued. I found a partial German (Nazi style) spread eagle proof under the stock line on the barrel near the receiver. I am hoping this rifle this was used as a sniper in WWII?

The surplus scope mounting lugs just in front of the turret would surely not be present on a properly set up sniper rifle. And the mounting is a common quick-release type holding a scope that only has vertical adjustment. The rear mount has to be adjusted to center the rifle when setting it up, and is then fixed.
It looks to me like a hunting rifle, used for shooting while standing. You say yourself that it is a sporter, not a service rifle. The scope is set so far back that it would be dangerous to shoot lying down. Unless, of course, you want to have your right eyeball pushed back to meet your right ear.

Thanks for your ideas! Mystery solved! It is rebarreled using a WWII Germanicon military barrel with that Nazi proof still showing. So no sniper and no military usage on this one. Just a nice hunting rifle. Thanks! Chris
